The Institution
of the National Committee

To celebrate the occasion, the Minister for Arts and Culture, – General Management for book goods and Cultural Institutes – on behalf of the proposal of the University of Tor Vergata, the National Association of the benefits of the South of Italy and the commune of Grottaferrata – has established with ministerial decree on February 19th, 2002, the National Committee for the Millennium celebration of the foundation of St. Nilo Abbey in Grottaferrata.
The Committee has promoted a series of cultural initiatives, the most important of which is the cataloguing of the Greek manuscripts produced in the South of Italy (Calabria, Sicilia, Basilicata, Puglia, Campania, Lazio).
Other significant initiatives are the publication of monographs, catalogues, critical essays and the mounting of an exhibition relevant to the Abbey, to St. Nilo and to the Italian Byzantine culture.
The program seeks to illustrate moments, aspects and problems in the history of Greek phone populations through literary, historical-artistic and archival testimonies: and this is not only to the restricted circle of the scientific community.
